From Iowa State Senator Joe Bolkom (D-Iowa City):
"Following a heated debate on Tuesday evening, the House of Representatives passed HF 2212, the Smoke Free Air Act, which prohibits smoking in all
public areas except casinos and closed fraternal organizations. There were several proposed amendments which altered the bill to do such things as include casinos in the ban, and they did not pass.
Following passage of the bill, it was sent to the [Iowa] Senate and has since been referred to the committee on State Government. Debate on the floor of the Senate is expected next week
While the bill is not perfect, I believe it goes a long way toward improving the health of all Iowans. I look forward to working with my colleagues in
the Senate to pass some form of ban on public smoking, and I hope to have a bill on the Governor's desk soon."
